In rural area of India & in other developing countries it is difficult to have sustainable achievement in health sector alone without adopting a multi-sectoral approach, linking health with development. Gandhiji's vision of rural development through Panchayat Raj also focus on the same. the same has been included in Bhore committee definition of Comprehensive Health Care & later on in concept of Primary Health Care at various forums by WHO & other UN agencies.
The issue is that why our health system and the policy makers are not appreciating the same in practice in conceiving , planning and implementing various health strategy?
Comprehensive development consists of one essential ingredient: overall good and stable health in general at community level. Government with its various agencies trying to relate health programs with other development programs. At village level we have VDC (village development committee) which also takes care of health related programs at village level. Some development programs such as sanitation, constructing toilets and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan are actually health programs. It’s true that many development activities causing major damage to general health and health professionals have nothing to say against it. Lack of agreement and cooperation amongst different agencies is hampering this aspect of development. Lack of social awareness, defaulted political will and expediency are major hindrance in practicing this approach.
