I am involved in synthesis of metal nanoclusters using Thioglycolic acid.
The solution emits weak red fluorescence at 590 nm (Ex= 400nm).
I doubt the emission is due to some complex formed between metals and TGA rather than metal nanoclusters
Please help to me land on to a proper conclusion
I was working on a similar project, but with different metal and ligand. I suggest to use MALDI-TOF MS or PAGE (if you people have facility), Also you can check their precipitation ( >20k RPM microcentrifuge), and last thing is you can monitor their Absorption band of UV, in my case Absorption peak of complex was reported at some lower wavelength, which was decreasing by the time. Since you are using TGA in your fabrication protocol , that contains S
chances are formation of MoS2 that is fluorescent can not be ruled out and this may be the cause of fluorescence that you observe
TGA, usually as its dianion, forms complexes with metal ions. Such complexes have been used for the detection of iron, molybdenum, silver, and tin.
