Hello! I have recently started collecting data using a Brain Products EEG system. I use nose tip as online reference when I recording the data. I was just confused should I have to average the TP9 ,TP10 as offline re-reference. some researches did, however, some didn't do it. the results with reference and the result without re-reference are different, so I don't know which should I trust. can you give me some suggestions?
As fa as i know it's not necessary. We haven't done it in our study and it was not a problem to publish the data in the way i stated here.
It depends on the research question and what you're comparing it to. Some components (like MMN) are commonly analyzed with nose reference, others (like N400) not so much. In the future it would be ideal to have this decision made before you analyze the data. For now the best you can do is choose the one that makes sense for your research question (e.g., which one will allow you to compare against other relevant results). The one thing you definitely must not do is choose whichever one gives you a "better" (i.e., more desirable for your hypothesis) result and only report that one. If the two references give substantially different patterns and you have no a priori reason to prefer one over the other, then you have to report both and acknowledge that your result seems to be dependent on reference (and that it may need further confirmation in future experiments where the choice of reference is made a priori).
