I would like to analyse films made by women considering film aesthetics and narrative structures. Is there an alternative female oriented theory i can use instead of the psychoanalysis based literature by Mulvey, Butler & Co.?
You could try the evolutionary role of woman, which is quite specific in humans. Maybe it is most palatable in the form of Darwinian literary theory, or maybe not.
Dear Donald, thank you for your thought. I'm not sure Darwin could actually explain nowadays films more than Freud does. Looking for something fresh... ;)
I do aesthetic based feminist film theory - please have a look at my essay about scandinavien detective characters in TV Shows in that bilangual book: http://www.fink.de/katalog/search.html?tx_mbooks%5BsAdvanced%5D=1&tx_mbooks%5BsAuthor%5D=Christoph%20Dreher%20%28Hg.%29&cHash=d1e7ecde0ae945a6f617f8b6e2779aab
I agree with Leo (without reading his paper that I'm not sure is attached). Close reading of aesthetics and film techniques should reveal subtexts that subvert patriarchal power relationships without the need to refer to abstract theory. Take a look at the films you are studying, find the subversive, feminist subtext, then if you must have theory, find one that explains what you find in the films.
to link Derrida with feminist film analysis seems to be a paradox to me ;-)
if youa re able to speak french and to ask arte (European Culture Chanel) for a copy, they produced a feature by Marie Mandy I can recommend to you. This is a good starting point for a lecutre or seminar or research in that field, from my pov. For my students this works as an eye-opener - also for thinking about film and for a analysis from a female point of view

Hello Mahella, I am using semiotics as way to explore a feminist response to the female nude. Social semiotics would be equally applicable to film analysis, and offers a way to explore and reveal social constructions of meaning. (The following paper references Derrida too!)
