When studying the use of bio-fuels as bio-ethanol or bio-diesel as additives to diesel fuel or gasoline, we always study its effects on regulated emissions as NOx, CO, CO2, HC. However, what about the unregulated emissions like aromatics, benzene, and other carcinogens.
Dear Miqdam, bio-fuels are mostly ethanol and biodiesel as you have said. Biodiesel is produced from plant and animal oils that means it contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen only, there are no aromatic or benzene rings as found in petroleum fuels. on combustion, it produces carbon dioxide and water mainly, however, due to incomplete combustion may also produce carbon monoxide (CO). Ethanol on the other hand may be obtained from plant material or
from petrochemical products. it also contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen only. since oxygen supports combustion, the product of combustion should be carbon dioxide and water only as before. there is less health risk to human using these fuels than those from petroleum fuels.
The addition of Biofuel (Biodiesel, Bioethanol,..) to fossil fuel by 10, 20%, or more this reduce the emission of toxic gases to the atmosphere and hence reduce the risk

Obviously yes. Biodiesel are harmful but quite less than diesel. However, NOx emission is challenging. All biodiesel emts higher NOx than fossil fuels

Thank you for valuable contribution. As regulated emissions as HC, CO2 and CO will reduce by using biodiesel, NOx will be a challenge as you revealed. However, I think but need confirmation that the main hazards in using biodiesel is in its unregulated emissions as Acetaldehyde , Formaldehyde, Astylene, Ethylene, and Propylene. The question is there any measured data of these pollutants?

If smoke is going to be released, it is obviously harmful. More studies are still required to list out the chemicals released during combustion
