Renewable energy means the energy sources that can replenish even after the exploitation. This are also known as non- conventional energies. But green energy means the energy sources that are from the nature and having not an impact on environment. Consider hydro power plants the water can be reused to produce the power hence renewable but in an environmental view the deforestation, ecosystem disturbance during construction makes it not green energy.
Green energy is energy derived from vegetals or algae for example biofuels, biogas from anaerobic digestion or hydrogen obtained by fermentation of vegetals.
Renewable energiy is a broader concept including green energy
, but also photovoltaic power, wind turbines, hydroelectrical power and e-fuels (fuels synthetized from CO2 and renewable power).
Actually, the duo are currently being define interchangeably as the type of energy derived from energy sources which are replenishable within a reasonable period of time. In my own opinion, if someone insist me to differentiate between the two, I will consider Green Energy as the energy sources derived from agricultural products/residues. This type of energy includes Biogas, Ethanol, Biodiesel and Briquettes. On the other hand, renewable energy can be considered as energy with replenishable energy sources like solar energy and hydro power.
"Green" is used by media only . "Renewable" is not used by physicists. Better 'ld be to use the word "Solar" which underlines the real source of the energy that is hopefully expected to satisfy our requirements through minimizing most negative impacts
The former answers, which differ from each other, clearly show that these two concepts need standardized, commonly agreed definitions!
Note that energy itself is always conserved (if we include mass because E = mc²), and therefore, energy is always renewable, but energy agents can be transformed from one form to another. Therefore, there are renewable and not renewable energy agents.
I propose to call "renewable energy agents " those that will not disappear soon, or that will be available for some time, say a billion years. With this definition, all energy agents obtained from the solar energy (wind and hydro, photovoltaic, bio fuels (when used at a limited rate) , etc) are renewable since the sun will remain as it is now for a few billion years, and agents extracted from the earth crust such as coal, petroleum and derivative and even uranium are not.
Besides, as a physicist, I fully agree with Jacques Roturier and propose to forget coloring energy agents in green, blue, grey, black or white!
Renewable energy sources are generally eco-friendly and inexausatble in nature, can be utilised again and again but green energy terms are utilised only for eco-friendly nature of fuel, these fuels may be exhaustible in nature. All renewable energy sources can be say green energy but all green energy are not renewable in nature.
Solar energy, wind energy, hydro power are the example of renewable energy sources. Bio-oil, biogas, biohydrogen, producer gas are green fuel, can be obtained from renewable energy sources. Mainly green energy are obtained from biomass.
I agree with Rupal Jain but would mention that energy sources (or agents) that are qualified as renewable also have their limits. For example, wood as energy agent is renewable only if we use each year not more than the mass that grows each year.
Also we cannot cover more than a certain part of the earth area with photovoltaic panels. This limit is nevertheless not stringent, since the earth receives, as solar radiation, several thousands time the energy use of mankind. However, PV panels change the albedo, and heat the surrounding air more than white surfaces. Covering all the white roofs of Thira in Santorini may therefore change the climate of that small city, even if the produced electricity replaces the imported one for air conditioning (see attached paper).
Although its important to know that “renewable” means electricity. Green is for influencing the ignorant. (Which is a deliberate campaign targeting 99.9% of the general public)
The value of each of the different sources of energy is not equal. Fossil fuels have more value than any of the others because they can be used in many more different applications. Fossil fuels are "green" because the CO2 they release is "greening" the Earth. Satellites show the leaf index is increasing with higher CO2 levels in the atmosphere. Labeling fossil fuels as something other than "green" is part of the war on fossil fuels. The reason we have the time and equipment to discuss this issue is because of the many benefits the fossil fuels have brought us. Everything we build, wear or consume has a fossil fuel component. Celebrate fossil fuels for the benefits they bring humanity.
Renewable energy cut across all energy sources that are naturally replenishing, while green energy specifically focuses on environmentally friendly sources with minimal or no negative impact on the environment.
While all renewable energy sources are considered environmentally friendly compared to fossil fuels, green energy sources go a step further by emphasizing their low environmental impact. Green energy sources are typically those that produce little or no greenhouse gas emissions during their operation. For example, wind power and solar energy are often considered green energy sources because they generate electricity without emitting greenhouse gases or producing harmful pollutants. Biomass energy, on the other hand, may be considered renewable but not necessarily green if it involves the burning of agricultural waste or other organic materials, which can release carbon dioxide and other pollutants.
"Green energy" is an advertising term. It is used to try to show that some sources of energy are more environmentally friendly than others, such as fossil fuels. It is used primarily for the energies that supply electricity. Electricity is essential for modern life. But, it cannot make any of the myriad of goods we use daily. It powers our computers but it cannot make a computer. Only fossil fuels can make a computer. See this one minute video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/stf2YrznkZU
