Basalts are categorized into three types based on their source composition: DM (Depleted Mantle), EM (Enriched Mantle), and HM (Hydrated Mantle). Typically, DM basalts are sampled from Mid-Ocean Ridge Basalts (MORBs), EM basalts come from plumes, and HM basalts are associated with arc regions. However, these classifications apply to present-day scenarios. In the Archean, both DM and EM basalts originated from the convecting upper mantle. The common belief is that Archean basalts were formed as a result of plume melting. Nonetheless, some scientists argue against this notion, suggesting that Archean plumes were too hot to produce basalts. Instead, they propose that Archean Komatiites and Ferrokomatiites were the products of plume melting during that time.
