Hi everyone. Can anybody discuss the use of Digital BP monitor (e.g. Certeza BM-405) vs traditional mercury sphygmomanometer for the record of blood pressure for research purposes. which one is better than the other one?
The gold standard for recording blood pressure will remain the traditional mercury sphygmomanometer.
Although the digital manometers are easy to use and convenient, traditional mercury sphygmomanometer remains the gold standard for measurement of peripheral BP for standardization.
However, the best method to check the central blood pressure is by aortic catheterization that is correlated to mortality.
I agree that traditional mercury sphygmomanometer remains the gold standard for measurement of BP. However in some countries they are prohibited. Digital BP monitors are recommendet only if they are validated in the international studies (AAMI, ESC, BSH etc.). The list of validated deviced you can find on the several professional sites like http://www.dableducational.org/index.html.
Traditional BP instrument is always better as comparison to digital meter..Accuracy is most important feature of traditional BP instrument.A smallest/light beat can recorded during uses by which little fluctuation can observed manually wd accuracy..
I agree with Dr Yuriy M. Sirenko. Digital BP monitors must be approved by AAMI, ESC or BSH.I believe it is the best alternative when several researchers will carry out the measurements.
