More specifically, I'd like to remove serum albumin from sera without affecting the distribution of small molecules that bind to albumin such as cytokines. Any ideas are welcome.
This is by no means trivial. It also depends on whether you will need the albumin acitve or if you just want to get rid of it because of background/noise. I dont know if it will do the trick but there is an albupure resin from ProMetic which might be worth looking at: http://www.prometicbiosciences.com/applications/protein-purification/fusion-proteins/albupure
But I dont know if you can find a conditions, where it wil bind albumin, but not other proteins, but still under conditions where other small molecules dont bind to albumin ....
If you are only interested in the small proteome some kind of Mw cut off method might also be applicable - although here you are properly challenged by your low sample volume.
Rather than thinking only to remove albumin you can think of removal and enrichment also cytokines using Albusorb or Albuvoid for Albumin Depletion Kit
