I'm planning to identify the compound which is expected to be a long chain carbon aldehyde(~C16), and for now we have DB-5ms column.
I checked the chemical structural difference between the two, but not sure what the benzene ring in DB-5ms is for.
It seems like the two have similar polarity, but I wanted to assure it by asking here.
Any comments will be appreciated!
Benzene is for arylene phase distribution in GC-MS columns. It should be considered as a stabilizing agent against the vacuum effect instead of a secondary interaction. Your target molecule seemed to be appropriate to analyze within these columns whether includes benzene or not. In the case of the use of GC-MS systems benzene embedded WCOT columns are very reliable. and should be preferred.

You have 5% of phenyl groups on PDMS on both phases. Vendors are different and slighty the technology of manufacturing. THusvery small differences in selectivity can be found.
You can find on Agilent website a retention data for many VOCs for both columns.
For idetyfication you should use rentention index database and (or) GC-MS.

Both the columns are have similar stationary phase i.e 5% diphenyl 95% dimethylpolysilaxones and both are low bleed column. Both are supplied by Agilent so there should not be any difference.
The columns are made from the same material. DB-5ms is manufactured by J&W (Supelco) and HP-5ms is made by Agilent. There may be slight differences in the retention time of the analytes.

Both column separation will be same as well as sensitivity too. The column materials also not a much different. You can go with your residue and make sure it must be volatile or semi volatility. I hope it will work if not go with derivatization.
As mentioned above, Both are having similar packing material and low bleed columns, in DB-5MS benzene compounds show a good resolution only check it.
