Good Day, Chandana. I am currently pursuing a Design Science Research (DSR) project with the aim to develop a novel Knowledge Management (KM) concept supported by a prototype system. The continued non-availability of such personal KM systems inhibits organizations (Pasher & Ronen, 2011), academia (Bedford, 2012), and the creative class (Florida, 2012) due to non-effective tools (Kahle, 2009; Davies, 2011), lacking work force acceptance of traditional KM system generations (Wilson, 2002; Schuett, 2003; Malhotra, 2004; Pollard, 2008; Frost, 2013), and escalating opportunity divides (Drori, 2010; Giebel, 2013).
Self-awareness - in this context - plays a crucial role to match personal needs, challenges, and barriers to the affordances such a system has to afford to its users and knowledge workers. The considerations resulted in devising a Personal Knowledge Management for Development (PKM4D) framework inspired by Maslow’s extended Hierarchy of Needs and an ICT4D Framework for Human Development. It provides a common-sense heuristic in form of an integrative motivational scaffold matching the ambitions of users the PKM system serves. It adds transparency by pointing out twelve escalating levels of exciters & delighters with corresponding inhibitors & demotivators which can also be used for assessing interventions in the individual, organizational, and societal capacity development contexts of opportunity divides and knowledge societies.
Self-awareness and self-actualization form not only part of the framework, but the PKM4D framework itself aims to be a tool to create self-awareness for the uninitiated. As Kruger and Dunning observed, people who are unskilled in many social and intellectual domains “suffer a dual burden: Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the meta-cognitive ability to realize it” (Kruger & Dunning, 2009). Their study results concur with the saying: “Not ignorance, but ignorance of ignorance, is the death of knowledge”. Thus, developing peoples’ intellectual, social, and emotional capital requires advanced assistance which a PKM system can offer.

When you speak about developing leaders, as the core concept of modern leadership theories focus around authentic leaders, it is key they have self awareness, as otherwise they cannot be authentic. The development of leaders follows three main steps, which are all focussing around the step by step development of the self-concept, and as such the awareness of the self.
