I am trying to determine the oxidation state of my material containing copper and zinc that I synthesize whether it is 2+ or 1+ oxidation state. I am almost certain that the zinc is 2+, but I would like to determine the oxidation state of the copper. The material is in solid form, but I can dissolve them as a liquid as well. Is there any simple method to characterize my material?
Can UV-Vis help me? For example, would the max absorption of Cu2+ vs Cu+ appears at different wavelength?

For organic molecule the most common way is by charge balance from single crystal XRD. You can differentiate between Cu+ (d10, diamagnetic) and Cu2+ (d9, paramagnetic) by 1H NMR. You should get sharp NMR signal (like Zn2+) for Cu+ but broad for Cu2+. Cu+ and Cu2+ systems might have a different absorption maximum in UV-vis but it won't help here as their peak varies due to many factors. In fact Cu2+ will have a d-d transition not Cu+. XPS is a widely used technique for determination of oxidation state.

Thank you very much for your answer and suggestions. I have tried using XPS to determine the oxidation state of copper in my samples, and led to a failure. It seems that I need to do a very long scan of XPS (in a range of weeks) in order to detect the copper in my samples. I will definitely try to use 1H NMR to characterize my sample.
