If an oxygen vacancy is the lack of an oxygen in a site in the lattice, what is a possible explanation for the ability to probe the presence/quantity of oxygen vacancies in an oxide film such as SnO2 and SiO2 by deconvoluting the O-1s XPS spectrum into various components, of which one is assigned to oxygen vacancies?
Especially since no O-1s XPS signals can be emitted if there is no oxygen at that vacancy.
