Derivative spectrometry is one of the Sequential Methods: Does this classification reflect the essence of the method ?

According to R.G. Brereton Derivative spectrometry (DS) is one of the Sequential Methods of data processing. However, the essence of this method is use of the derivatives instead of spectra. DS is one of the Linear Transform Methods, e.g., direct use of Fourier harmonics and Wavelets as an analytical signal.
