Are teachers interested in learning Tinkerplots? Do they believe their students can interface with the software easily enough, or is the learning curve too steep for Tinkerplots to be implemented extensively in classrooms? That has always been my concern. I hope you find a way so that everyone can see how beautiful and useful it can be, and how beneficial it can be for students to make sense of and represent in a personalized way their data. Thank you, Lorraine. It is nice to hear from another dedicated TinkerPlots supporter. I think TinkerPlots can be introduced easily in to the classroom. The students are always keen to use it and work their way through the functions easily once instructed on how to input data and create basic graphs. The main challenge in Australia is the cost of purchasing the software. It is not that it is expensive, it is more that it is additional cost for individual schools considering Excel comes with the Microsoft suite of applications that makes up the operating systems supplied by the departments of education. Another challenge is convincing teachers to take the time to incorporate TinkerPlots into their teaching practice. This requires them to up-skill, which tends to not be a priority when there are many demands competing for their time.
Over the next two weeks, I will be working with year 5 students using TinkerPlots to identify trends in bi-variate data. I will put an update in the Data modeling project when done.
