It is possible, if the home appliances work directly with DC. LED Lighting works with DC too, but when it comes to other loads including AC motors, etc. a smart inverter is a must. DC systems have got significant importance than that of AC in microgrids, where photovoltaic systems combined with batteries avoid more losses, reduce conductor size and numbers and also the cost of installation.

It is best to use DC at home level. SPV can be connected directly and storage will be easy. Only limitation, if any motor is added, it should be of lower size for HVAC and water pumping

I was involved in a research project a few years ago that looked at the benefits of powering a bank of 50 modified PCs, LED lighting and DC displays from battery backed DC micro-grid. At the time, PC power supplies were not very efficient (c.60%), and the ones that were were generally expensive. In the 8+ years since that work, PCs have often been replaced by more portable devices (tablets, laptops etc). This has had two effects: energy demand for those devices is lower (compared to PCs) but the requirement for DC still exists. The latest USB standards offers much more flexibility on voltages and powers, so perhaps it is time to think about DC/USB micro-grids integrated in to building design. However, where distributed (i.e. plug-in) inverters have become more efficient and cleaner (i.e. effect on the AC supply) this had tended to reduce the benefits provided by centralised and more costly inverter systems.

We are living in a direct current world. The majority of devices we use in homes, offices, healthcare facilities, greenhouses or data centres can use electricity from renewables as direct current (DC), without conversion to alternating current (AC). All the developing contries are also used this. However, in house hold purpose, if you are choosing dc source, i think it is quite impossible. Because all the loads are ac operated and it is applicaplable for some loads which are battery operated. Frequency and phase angle mismath becomes amajor challenge. However, more research requires in this field
