I'm trying to figure out the taxonomic history of Dallinella (formerly Terebratalia) smithi (Arnold, 1906). Described as a fossil from the Pliocene of Deadman Island (destroyed in 1928) in Los Angeles Harbor it was transfered to the genus Dallinella by Hatai (1940; The Cenozoic Brachiopoda of Japan. Science Reports, Tohoku Imperial University, series 2, v. 20, p. 1-413), which has mostly been ignore until recently. Hertlein and Grant (1960; The geology and paleontology of the marine Pliocene of San Diego, California; Paleontology, Coelenterata, Bryozoa, Brachiopoda, Echinodermata. San Diego Society of Natural History Memoir, v. 2, pt. 2A, pp. 73–133) synonymies it under T. arnoldi Hertlein and Grant 1960, but do not state a reason. My questions is why is it symonymised under a younger name (T. arnoldi) and not the other way around as D. smithi (=D. arnoldi)?
