Can anyone suggest that how can we give no. of load cycle in abaqus. I am working on modelling of railway ballast where i have to put sinusoidal load cycle on the top surface of ballast. Presently I am giving tabular amplitude but not getting correct result. Plz help me

you can use all steps as you named but for enhancement you can use the Static general as well. but in this step activate the Nonlinear Geometry of the model.
another important thing is that, you have to define a specific number between 0-1 for tension recovery under concrete compression damage if your model is concrete.
and in your case, you are right. you can use the tabular option instead of periodic one. Usually the periodic option is used for other analysis like frequency response or fatigue analysis.
I'm not sure whether this may help you directly, but some papers written by Prof. B Indraratna (or his colleagues) at Wollongong, Australia might help you.

You may use amplitude with PERIODIC definition. You can choose between Sin or Cos and have to provide angular frequency (omega)(rad/s) and the duration of the step shall decide the number of cycles.
