I am doing a PhD research on mapping urban material and temperature (urban heat island) by using the best available hyperspectral and multispectral data in terms of the spectral, spatial, and radiometric resolution.
I don't think you can get hyperspectral images from satellite, because they are not commercial yet. But you can use multispectral images from Worldview 1 and 2 with 7 bands . Also if you desire to have high spatial resolution, you can use SPOT-5 Pan images with 2.5 meter resolution.
it is right EO-1 Hyperion is free however it is 30 m resolution and the spatial coverage is too limited does not cover a big part of a city just a segment
