I highly recommend a non-windows machine to work with ns-3. If you can have virtual machine, and have some Linux flavor (I suggest ubuntu for ns-3), then your life will be much easier. Windows support is ad-hoc, in the sense, don't expect full functionality.

I agree, Cetinkaya. Ubuntu already has ns-3 and related binary packages.

I have always been working with ns-2 and did not switch to ns-3 since most of my code was already written for ns-2. If you start now, I would recommend ns-3, unless you depend on other tools with only ns-2 support.

What about MATLAB for such kind of simulations ?

However, Matlab also does not contain inbuilt codes for different scenarios but it gives you a highly flexible option for coding.

Omnet++ is free and very flexible. Also, the INETMANET framework includes many protocols for simulating MANETs, such as OLSR, DSR, DSDV, DYMO, AODV, 802.11 (a,g,e) and rstp.

The simulation models are implemented in C++. The network topology and models interconnections are described through the OMNeT++’s topology description language, NED, which is very easy to use.

Another important point is that the UI allows to interact with the system through a graphical interface (Tkenv) or a commandline interface (Cmdenv).

Well you can go for ns2 or qualnet. They are both good and perform better.

NS2, NS3 , QualNet (free one month License on request), OmNet++ are some of free network simulators but NS2 is most used and well tried simulator with random mobility

OMNET++ is not commercial!

I suggest NS2 which is free and flexible. It contains the major protocols supported by MANET. What's more, it's very easy to add your own protocol to NS2 platform. The drawback of NS2 is there're a large number of bugs. But anyway it is a very good tool for network simulation for academic purpose.

I didn't try NS3. But it might be better for it's a new version of the NS simulators.

Both NS-2 and NS-3 are potential tools, but at this stage and specially for working with MANETs, i would recommend u NS-2 and not NS-3, since NS-2 is quite popular and u could find many codes, modules and support on the internet (for free), whereas NS-3 is relatively new and u might find difficulties in finding other peoples work while using NS-3. I'm currently using NS2. It's free, and has a large community support. And, yeah, the Introduction to Nework Simulation NS-2" by Teerawat Issariyakul will help you good. It's available on google books.

Hi, You can have a look to WSNet (http://wsnet.gforge.inria.fr/) it is more dedicated to wireless sensor networks but can be used for MANET. Tutorials are available.

NS2 and 3 are very good simulator, but maybe the learning curve can be a bit hard..., omnet++ is also a good option depending on your goals.

I used in my PhD studies ShoX simulator, from Paderborn University, and further developed it to GrubiX, with a research group in Brazil. You can find the latest updates of this simulator in the following link:

Extending comment from Maria Fazio, I used both NS2 and Omnet++. Basically I shifted from NS2 to Omnet++. Omnet++ is architecturally very clean. In addition to INETManet you can use Mixim framework for wireless sensor network simulation.

About QualNet, I have used it long time ago and I agree on its advantages: it is easy to use, has many modules for wireless networks and good performance. However, it is a commercial software and you need a license for using it.

As far as I know, there are free licenses for Academy, but they can be used on few PCs and must be renewed every year.

For a quick comparison of available network simulators, you can read the paper: "Siraj,Kumar Gupta, Rinku-Badgujar, Network Simulation Tools Survey, International Journal of Advanced Research in Computer and Communication Engineering Vol. 1, Issue 4, June 2012"

NS-2. It has a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, NS2 would suffice for most of your needs.

OPNET could be good for MANET simulation

I have worked with ns2. It's good and you will get a lot of tutorial for it. A friend of mine has worked with omnet++. But you will not get it's full version for free.

WSNet is a pretty good tool. It is open source and event-based. Simulation code has to be made in a distributed way (from a sensor point of view), which helps to implement in real experimentation.

During my thesis work, I needed to deal with mobile ad hoc nodes so I worked on INET and INETMANET projects (https://github.com/inetmanet/inetmanet). INETMANET is built based on OMNet (completely free and open-source). As you know OMNet (http://www.omnetpp.org/) is not a network simulator. It is an environment to build your simulator. Therefore, if you are not familiar with Omnet++ I’m strongly suggesting reading about Omnetpp before starting working on INETMANET. Try to start with “tic toc” tutorial (see OMNet tutorials) or at my blog here (http://omnetgroup.wordpress.com/).

NS 2 or NS 3 are best for network simulation. u just have to be familiar with linux OS because f u try NS in windows with cyguin, u will confront a lot of problem in stability and compilation

Comparied with the NS-2,NS-3, Truetime, OPNET, OMNET++, I think the OMNET++ would be the most wonderful choice for the MANET simulation.

I suggest you guy should attemp the OMNET++ framework.

OPNET IT Guru (free for academic program) would be good for ad hoc net simulation because of its easy to use GUI.

As many people said, there are a lot of tools to work with. The most known are: NS, OPNET and OMNET++. However, NS2/3 have a lot of versioning-issues and OPNET has licence requirements that you have to deal with. I have been working with OMNET++ for years and it is a good tool. It is not perfect but it has been powerfull enough for most of research I have done. Moreover, it as a nice UI and it is available for most of the operating systems (Linux, Windows and Mac OSX). The INET framework performs slightly different than usual models in OMNET++, so I suggest start working with some of the examples provided by OMNET++ (there are a lot in the samples folder of the OMNET++ installation) and then move to INET (or some other framework for MANET).

Just like a lot of people, I would suggest the same, Use OMNeT++, it is probable one of the best freely-available tool in the market. The INET sub-module has another package called INETMANET and is used to do the MANET simulation. This is a very good mobility framework in OMNeT++ also, you might encounter some issues in installing it in Windows + Cygwyn so better use a Linux VM or an actual linux machine to prepare your simulation test-bed.

NS2 is the good simulator for the simulation of MANET. But u can also use the BonnMotion fro creating the adhoc environment for MANET. I use the NS2 with BonnMotion.

GlomoSim.. it's open source and well documented code... you can easily change the code for MANET.. There're certain pre-defined protocols are given...

Here are some points to consider when choosing your network simulator:

- How actively is it maintained? What is the length of the release cycles? (ns-2 only gets bug fixes and, then again, very slowly; it is a platform that has been phasing out for years)

- Do you care about how closely its models implement established protocol standards? (I worked with ns-2 many years ago and the 802.11 has serious problems - in spite of that, everyone used it and published their scientific experiments with that model)

- Can you get help quickly when you run into issues? (having a developers and users mailing list or discussion forum will help you more than you can imagine)

- What is the state of documentation? Do you have tutorials to guide you up the learning curve? Do you have easily accessible and well organized descriptions of all the functionality?

- What are the models that you really care about? Do you need specific routing protocols? Detailed and accurate radio propagation models? Lower layer support? Variants of 802.11? Cell models like LTE? Specific mobility models?

- Do you need to ready to use support for output data processing and visualization?

- Do you just want to use the simulator or do you mean to contribute to the development of its library of models and publicly release your code?

With these criteria in mind, I'd say that for free, open-source simulators, ns-3 and OMNeT++ are the two top contenders, but you still have to look at which best fits your needs. Glomosim is a dead platform, as far as I know; development and maintenance for it ceased when it became commercial (Qualnet) - additionally, if you plan to modify Glomosim models to release into the public domain, you will discover that you cannot do that. The licensing is restrictive when it comes to redistribution.

By the way, if you can't get ns-3 to build in your Windows 7 because of python, you might be able to build without that type of support. For instance:

./waf configure --disable-python

will build the distribution for C++ use. The Python support is there for people who want to create simulations in that language, which will be bound to the object code generated from C++.

The most important criteria would be whether target simulator fulfils your needs or not. I worked on different simulation projects and I also checked various simulation tools and play with it. But, I found Glomosim simple and very handy when doing simulation in my work of modification AODV in MANET.

@Milad: you're correct in saying that ns-3 is an entirely new simulator, redesigned from the ground up and GPLv2 licensed. It has a faster discrete-event simulation engine and a cleaner programming model (no mixing up of OTcl and C++, but rather all in C++). Whoever is interested can develop simulation experiments in Python, but don't understand that there's a mix up of languages as there was in ns-2. There are Python bindings for the ns-3 C++ library, so you can instantiate and use existing classes.

ns-3 has been an NSF sponsored project that is now in its 7th year of existence and in version 16 with the release of 17 just around the corner. The team of ns-3 developers and contributors, from academia and industry, spans the world: France, US, Italy, Croatia, Japan, Brazil, Germany, Spain, just to name a few countries. It has a very active developer community and contributions to the project undergo a code review system, what maintains the consistency of the code base and serves to give more faith in the correctness of the distribution. Although the project is very mature after all these releases, it continues to be very active and every three months there are new models and enhancements in updated releases. I encourage you to take a look at the body of work that is being developed using ns-3 - see the proceedings of SIMUTools and WNS3, for instance. The URL of the project is http://www.nsnam.org.

One may say that I am biased, since I'm associated with the project. I have to say, though, that having worked with network simulation for quite a while (I have used ns-2, GloMoSim, and SSF-based simulators, in addition to a few obscure ones), I find ns-3 a very solid project.

I guess the simulators that you mentioned are the most well known network simulator. Try OPNET Modeler 14.5.

Both Ns-2 and NS-3 is considered to be good for simulation for MANET based protocols. NS-3 is a very powerful environment, however not much help is available while simulating some complicated protocols like CBRP etc. Hence NS-2 was the best option for my research work related to multimedia traffic provisioning over Hybrid MANET environments

The choice of platform should take into account the maturity of the protocol stacks you want to use.

NS-2 is a better choice for MANET.

OPNET for research is a free and gives you flexibility to write your codes but you have to renew it after every six months. Some time open source tools needs alot more work in understanding the architecture.

If you are familiar with java, JIST/SWANS is a strong wireless ad hoc simulator. It works both on Windows and UNIX OS. It is more scalable than NS.

I highly recommend NS-3 for MANET routing protocols and I recommand Ubuntu. It is easy to learn and to install. Basic background on c++ especially classes and virtual function. I've chosen it for my research.

Off course NS2 is the most popular one in Ad hoc network simulation.as per my opinion NS3 will be better choice. U can try glomosim also that is non commercial version.

NS-2 stil more recommanded for network simulations; it is well positionned ,compared to other simulators, in the research community.

Also, you can find more documentation to start using ns-2.

Many others have given useful information about the simulators that exist.

I can't find the review at the moment, but there is evidence that for realistic mesh configurations that the simulators are not predictive of reality.

That is, while simulators can be helpful to identify and fix problems in mesh protocols, good performance in a simulator does not guarantee good performance in practice.

Indeed, that review that I cannot find right now highlighted how running different simulators over the same mock environment could yield wildly different results.

My point is go in with eyes open, and also consider making real physical networks on which to test and compare the protocols to maximise the applicability of the results obtained. Of course this may not be practical in all situations, so simply do what you are able in the circumstances.

I think NS3 is the best tool for adhoc simulation in MANET.

I do really like Omnet++ for its greater flexibility. NS3 is completely new from NS2, and modules are not portable. I would go with Omnet, or give a look at OPNET.
