Student security, distance education vs. the traditional classroom, and globalization in the college world are three main challenges of the XXI century University. Today the University must ensure the safety of the college student on campus grounds due to increased violence (ex. shooting). There is also the preference of online education versus traditional classroom education with its pros and cons. Finally, with the growing and rapid speed of globalization, and advertisers using technology as their form of marketing, the college student must be extra careful in ensuring the chosen college is accredited and valid.
These challenges , at least to me, are: (a) keeping up with the needs of the community, (b) focusing on the issue of blending and the role technological tools in the educational contexts, and (c) integrating theory and practice using collaborative techniques and international cooperation.
Biggest challenge is meeting the needs of a new Generation (Gen X) a generation who is digitally innate meaning, with a better understanding and stronger digital skills than those who could be teaching them. Second challenge, how do we ensure we develop the other skills this generation will need in the workplace.
The greatest challenge for any educator is capturing each student’s attention in their respective subject.
To bring aspects of creativity in the subject you teach.
When teachers are not techno-savvy it becomes a big challenge for teacher to keep Generation Z students' interest and attention to properly teach new concepts.
New Teaching methods as applicable to environmental/community and global needs which leads to transforming theoretical skills to physical consumable/services. Interest of the coming generation in academic or university education they believe in short cuts and less stressful ways to success which will lead to drastically drop in students enrolment to the university. Funding and government interference in the university administration and policy.
I do not see three challenges, there are just two. The first challenge was formulated by the Dean of Harvard Business School when I asked him in 2006 which problems HBS had. His reply was: "We have just three problems -- faculty, faculty, faculty". So the real challenge is to find and to develop the faculty able to cope with all fads of 'digitalized teaching methods',' participant-centered learning', 'learning styles of the generation Z+' etc. while keeping one leg in academia and the second leg in the real-world problems.
The second challenge is to apply the "transnational solutions"(Bartlett and Ghoshal) to universities, i.e. the ability to work efficiently and effectively both in the home country and in the bottom of the pyramid. To my knowledge, only INSEAD partly succeeded in such a task.
The responsibility for learning is on both the faculty and student and not on one or the other.
1. Students must read assigned reading and review the content with the intent to remember.
2. Faculty should make content available by addressing multiple learning styles, print, audio and video along with face to face.
3. Faculty need to be held to a standard where they would keep up with life long learning and be sensitive to all cultures which are more than the country a person is born in. This is shown by the differences in immediate families and there can be a big discrepency in similarities from the East or West side of a city which may affect persons learning.
The universities of 21st century are going to be quite different than universities of 20th century or earlier because of globalization and digitization. Now the short comings of faculty and academic standard of a university are noticed much earlier because of comparison with their peers. In an era where your knowledge become double in 5 years, it is really challenging for the faculty to deliver right kind of skills. There are three main stake holders in a University, faculty, students and university administration. These all three are challenges because emergence of new technology. So three challenges are
Three main Challenges of Universities of 21st century
1. Dissemination of misinformation, through Data morphing (use of all sorts of social media to spread all sorts of fake knowledge with utmost, so called scientific sophistication (loaded with fake facts and fake information), teachers and learners must be careful, what they are learning
2. Social media addiction is preventing current generation to study in depth; wise use of social media is essentially required by all (longer periods on social media sites, connectivity for fun; although social media can be effectively used as teaching and learning tool)
3. Micro and macro negative politics, at local, national and global level
I believe the three top challenges are 1) finding budget, as in Western countries there are no supports from government and universities have to self-fund most activities. 2) maintaining or improving the university ranking worldwide in research, education and knowledge transfer. 3) attracting the best teachers/researchers to join the university and increasing research funds.
My views are pretty much same as Mr.Azer because availability of resources is the most challenging part for University education for 21st century. That's why lot of talented students from low-income group can't able to enrol themselves due to increasing trend of tuition fees.
The wellbeing of students in higher education has been under the spotlight recently. Mental illness, suicide, substance abuse, and sexual harassment are some of the most serious issues affecting students, and universities are tasked with providing support both inside and outside of the classroom.
