The definition of " mode shape" for multistory building subjected to earthquake load. This mode may take first of 2 ..3 etc mode, Does any one explain the meaning of this term physically and algebraically?

Mode shape is defined as the possible behavior of the structure it may undergo during earthquake.
For a N-dof structure, there exist N specific shapes or structural configurations such that if the structure is set into free vibration by giving it an initial displacment profile that corresponds to any of those N specific shapes, the structure will vibrate maintaing that shape and at a particular frequency. Those N shapes are the mode shapes.
