One way to to make a simple structure more resistant to lateral forces is to tie the walls, floor, roof, and foundations into a rigid box that holds together when shaken by a quake.
Most people think that masonry buildings in general, and adobe buildings in particular, are the most dangerous ones. However, these buildings can survive moderate earthquake if they provided by suitable wall-to-roof and wall-to-wall connections. Using construction materials with good quality can make a big difference in their survival. Steel and concrete buildings without lateral resisting systems (as shown in the attached pictures) had also suffered heavily in past earthquakes. However, one must admit that masonry buildings suffered the most.
