In a recent study I published in the South African Journal of Sports Medicine, we explored the prevalence and risk factors of non-specific low back pain in amateur overhead athletes (e.g., volleyball, tennis). The findings highlighted a high rate of NSLBP and suggested that both physical and psychosocial risk factors may contribute to lumbar issues in this population.
Given the reliance on shoulder and trunk coordination in overhead sports, I’m curious to hear from colleagues and researchers:
I’m in the process of expanding this research and would really appreciate any input — especially from those working in shoulder biomechanics, sports rehab, or kinetic chain assessments.
Have you seen a connection between shoulder mechanics and low back pain in your work? What clinical signs or screening tools do you find most helpful?
Any suggestions, experiences, or references would be incredibly valuable as I plan the next phase of this research.
