I found some papers that used "univariate" and "bivariate" analyses interchangeably. Is there a clear distinction between the two terms, and can they be used as alternatives? What is the major criteria that make one choose either one to suit the intended purpose of analysis?

Yes, there is a clear distinction between these terms: univariate refers to single variable analysis whilst bivariate refers to two variable analysis. The only interchange I am aware of is with paired data using the same units, where the difference between two variables could be turned into a single variable.

Thank you very much for your answer. What I want to know is "if the variable is dichotomous, is there a possibility to adopt either univariate or bivariate analysis?" I see that some papers reported the use of univariate analysis while other papers used bivariate analysis for similar statistical approaches.
