We just got a new freeze dryer (Biobase) but unfortunately the machine arrived without pump oil, so could any machine/ car oil be used as a substitute? if not could you pls suggest any other type of oil.
It is always best to contact the manufacturer when asking about consumables for machinery. Every Biobase freezer dryer model has an inquiry tab that you can send a request through. They appear to use a standard vacuum pump that might be supplied by another manufacturer so I would ask if they make it, if not who does and what oil is recommended for use.

The typical oil used in a large rotary piston vacuum pump is a mineral oil that has been through a distillation process to reduce its vapor pressure. Vacuum pumps have an ultimate vacuum, sometimes called “blank off” vacuum, of 0.010 Torr (10 microns, 1 x 10-2 Torr or 0.0133 mbar). Vacuum pump oils can be prepared from hydrocarbon, silicone, PFPE, semi-synthetic, full synthetic and other varieties are also produced for certain vacuum applications. Vacuum pump oil works as mechanical lubricants and as a medium for trapping gas molecules. Normal viscosity for vacuum pump oil is 68 to 77 cst at 40°C.
That being said, a heavy weight synthetic engine oil should work for you, however be aware that motor oil may contain additives such as rust inhibitors that could separate from the base fluid and deposit on interior services as gummy residues. Vacuum pump oils are refined for use in a vacuum pump and may also contain additives for corrosion resistance, anti-oxidation and anti-foaming.
Cory's advise to contact the manufacturer is always a good one.
