A good paper about the correlation of the TWI with other environmental variables (i.e. vascular plant species richness, soil pH, groundwater level, soil moisture, etc.) can be found in "Sørensen, R.; Zinko, U.; Seibert, J. (2006). "On the calculation of the topographic wetness index: evaluation of different methods based on field observations". Hydrology and Earth System Sciences 10: 101–112". Alas, the authors conclude there is no clear way to find the best way to calculate the TWI. However this paper gives at least an idea of what the TWI can be used to model.

You should probably have a look at Beven and Kirkby's 1979 article, where TWI is presented ("A physically based, variable contributing area model of basin hydrology"). You could also check out an article by Kopecky and Cizkova (2010 - "Using topographic wetness index in vegetation ecology: does the algorithm matter?"), where TWI is defined in a short and clear way (and their work seems very interesting if your working with DEMs).
