I already understand that one needs to pay for every private repository in github but one can get unlimited private repos in bitbucket. This is particularly making a lot of people, especially students, settle with bitbucket. I still want to know if there are other reasons why one should think otherwise.
Also, could someone suggest a good tutorial on bitbucket?

It is not just for version control but also for unit testing. But i believe they are both important. So take what you want... :D

I'll add that if you plan to contribute to an existing open-source project, then choose whichever site is used by the project. As long as you stay on the same site, you'll get features that make contributing simpler, e.g. a web interface for creating forks and pull requests. It can be done manually but it's complicated.
In my opinion, github is more focused on the social aspect of collaboration and thus in a wide decentralized group, while bitbucket seems more focused on tight collaboration groups.
Also, a nice advantage of bitbucket is the availability of private repositories in the free tier and you can choose between git and mercurial. And one last thing, in bitbucket you get a nice wiki environment which can be managed as a git/mercurial repository in itself.
