I need to measure the color of plant samples taken from plants in the winter. I do not have any special equipment such as a reflectance spectrophotometer, colorimeter, etc. but I do have a fairly nice digital SLR and an 18% gray card. Is it possible to shoot photos of the samples in RAW format against the grey background, adjust and standardize, and then somehow extract color histogram information so that I can then compare groups of images? What sort of software do I need and what sort of workflow am I looking at? What kind of statistical approach best allows classification and comparison of the dominant colors in different groups of samples?
