While studying cogitive decline in brain in general or that in the specific brain regions( Neurodegeneration),

I noticed that cogitive decline maybe measured by fMRI bold signal...

As the stage/level( in longitudinal study) increases we can observe changes in the activation level of different brain regions. The activation decrease

may be due to low level of blood circulations,

neural activity / loss of neurons. However at some other times activation is noticed as increased than that seen before.

Was this phenomenon also type of Neurodegeneration ? Recently I found in many studies that activation increased than that in previous stages... but this increase of activation is tried to be justified as an effect of presence of other chemicals, and proteins in those brain regions... It may be stated as the unbalance of natural ratio of chemicals in the brain causes production of more chemicals/ proteins which then caused more brain activation than seen before while sometimes it results in decrease of the same in coming stages....

[[ brain fmri voxel activations also shown in attached images ]]

Now the question rises that

Q1) what is the role of fMRI bold signals regarding these proteins and chemicals ?

Q2) ls it right to say that increase in other chemicals also effects the fMRI bold signal ?

Q3) When considering other chemicals/protein roles, is fMRI bold signal helpful for the brain regions patterens ?
