Cloud forensics is indeed a hot topic. Because cloud offers such agility, with the ability to create (and delete) instances at will, the area is extremely challenging. I wrote a paper on the challenges of the audit trail which I list below.

I have also prepared you a list of relevant papers you might like to look at. There is a list on Cloud Computing for background. A list on Cloud Security to outline the problems. And a list on Cloud Forensics, which starts to address some of these issues.

I have seen people working with sleuthkit, a data recovery tool for Linux based file systems.If you accidentally delete  data from the file system and you want to recover, with sleuthkit you shall obtain the data traces from Inodes and recover the data back with in certain time period.
