Obviously schools and universities are only just beginning to come to terms with the emergence of AI tools like ChatGPT. However, I think that the general attitude is that such tools bring both benefits and dangers for education. As you say, one of the benefits is that they can be used to check and improve grammar and other aspects of language use. One of the debit sides is that it becomes more difficult for educators to tell whether a particular text is the student's own work or it has been enhanced by - or entirely written by - AI.

My advice would be that if you use ChatGPT or Grammarly (etc) you add a short statement at the end of your text, declaring that you used this particular tool, and how you used it. That way you cannot be accused of trying to mislead the reader by saying or implying that the text is all your own work.

The role of educators is to help students to learn and to improve their skills. As we move forward, I am sure that schools, colleges and universities will find ways of helping their students to use AI in ways that are ethical and that support learning.

Chat GPT can be an excellent tool for people who are not native speakers of English and need help with their grammar and syntax. It can help correct grammar mistakes, suggest better word choices, and even improve the overall readability of the text. However, some universities and journals may disapprove of using Chat GPT because they want to ensure that the paper is entirely original and not "over-edited" by an AI language model. In some cases, using such tools may also lead to plagiarism if it's not used appropriately. That said, if you're using Chat GPT for learning purposes and not for generating original content, then it can be a useful tool. It's essential to understand when and how to use such tools appropriately to avoid any ethical issues.

I agree with the previous responses. The problem we find is that you can give the Chat gpt a question, and it can give you a quite accurate answer most of the time, without doing any work. Then the student takes credit for the answer. It is a way to “cheat”. This is the main compl I have seen.

There is nothing wrong with grammar/spelling checking (with Chat GPT).

Some journals require you to declare that you did not use Chat GPT to write the article (and you can answer truthfully that you did not). You can even go so far as to say what you DID use it for.

I would caution you to not blindly trust it when it comes to grammar. It is often flat-out wrong. Especially when you ask it to explain the rules behind its suggestions to correct the grammar of a sentence.

In the attached screenshot, it claims the object is located in the end of the sentence. It clearly is not!

I regenerate the answer. Now it presents another example, and claims the object of the sentence is in the end. It clearly is not!

So, be careful.
