It would be helpful to know for which area and what you are trying to investigate, since typical methods may differ from one research area to another (although basic principles may be the same).
In addition to Rainer Duesing 's point, say what you mean by basic. Do you mean enough to be able to read most empirical articles in whatever discipline, or do you mean to do analyses. If the second of these, more detail of what you mean is necessary (e.g., surveys, brain scans, twin study methods).
