The objective is to (1) determine the distribution and limits of a population in a given area, (2) to determine all species present in the area, (3) to determine the relative abundance (apparent density) of each species present in time and space. I would be grateful for your input on challanges and solutions for these tasks... i.e. what are the requirements for a baseline-survey etc.
(Landscape scale would be approx. 900 ha or more.)
Smaller areas with replication is better and will help you determine the limits as well as biodiversity of insects. You can sample within these areas using quadrants, transects, etc.The replicates must be areas that are sufficiently distant from each other otherwise they will be pseudo-replicates.
Do you intend to study soil insects or other groups like honey bees?

As personnel will be limited, transect walks and netting (active sampling) are most likely not possible... do you have experience with combinatory traps to collect both, flying insects and ground beetles?
I have experience in working with soil insects- microarthropods and evaluation of land quality using these organisms. As a part of the work I have extracted these organisms straight from the soil without using traps. If you are looking for methods to collect carabid beetles, I can provide information within 1-2 days
