I am working on a past project in which I recorded the ambient noise in each cardinal direction for a minute but I did not obtain the LEQ sound pressure levels at the time I was recording the noise. I found that the NDSI measures anthropogenic disturbance relative to natural sounds, but I am wondering if this would be an appropriate use of the metric.

Dr Pandit: The Normalized difference soundscape index (NDSI) has been shown to accurately reflect anthropogenic noise when values are low (Gage and Axel 2014), and avian species richness when values are high (Fuller et al. 2015). have a look at the following link:

Hello! The Normalized Difference Soundscape Index computes the ratio of anthropophony to biophony. It is based on the assumption that biological/animal sounds are transmitted between 0.2 – 2 kHz and mechanical anthropogenic sounds between 2 – 8 kHz.
Of course, these ranges are not absolute, especially regarding biological sounds. The NDSI could be used to characterize acoustic environments giving an early warning regarding anthropogenic disturbance, but I don’t believe it could replace any intensity index.
Nevertheless, using the audacity software and the sound recordings conducted, you could calculate the RMS in decibels and compare which one of your recordings is the loudest.
