Can you suggest the best microcontroller to drive motors of an UAV? Now we are designing a control board and have to select the micom. Can you share your experience and considerations?
Actually, it depends on many factors. To my opinion the most important of them are price (of the whole inverter board), size and development time.
When you calculate the price, you have to consider the total price of the board, because some MCUs are more expensive, however they include additional peripheral, which saves total cost. I recommend you to consider ST micoms (STSPIN series), which include additional power ICs. These MCUs are more expensive, however they save the space in the inverter board. At the same time, the total price is almost the same.
Thank you for the information. The suggested MCUs are quite perspective. It seems that STSPIN-based inverters could be lighter and smaller, which is extremely importamt for UAV.
Wonkeong Kim I would recommend the Arduino Nano or Pro Mini because they are the lightest. Depending on the complexity of the required drone control system, the ATtiny microcontroller may even be able to go smaller.
Tae-Ho Yoon It does matter for light-weight UAVs, where every gram has to be optimized. If they develop heavy apparatus, the weight of small parts does not matter.
