I used to fabricate highly porous and hydrophobic macro porous membranes. But they are single layer and thicker (>100 microns). Suggestions for the fabrication of thin film hydrophobic macro porous layers are much appreciated. I prefer to fabricate these thin film membranes on any hydrophilic supports.

Anodization or anodizing is a very simple and effective techniue that has been successfully used to grow highly ordered titania nano tubes on metallic titanium and porous alumina on aluminium.hydrophobic behaviour can be easyly controlled through anodizing parameters affecting pore size and inter tube distance in the case of titania nano tubes.Membranes have also been prepared using this technique.
Thanks Francisco and Viswanathan. Mostly I will use hydrophilic polymeric materials as support layer. May be I will use ceramics later on.
May be you can use grafting or silylation method to fabricate the two different layers of membrane with different properties, the pore size can be controlled by using different size particle, different additive or any combustible materials
You can deposit low pressure plasma polymerized fluorocarbon coatings on hydrophilic substrates which would serve both the purposes such as hydrophobicity and nanostructured surfaces. In fact, you can also use atmospheric pressure plasma polymerized coatings to obtain porous materials with low wetability.
