AFM is sometimes said to be a "machine for visualizing artefacts" (heard from an AFM supplier !!), so are there any well-known methods for avoiding seeing artefacts as much as possible ? I believe that the way the samples are prepared has an paramount importance, but where such information can be found ? My samples, especially, have many possible forms: hard and rough monoliths, soft gels, coarse grains, fine powders, ... Are you aware of methods allowing good and safe observation (safe for the tip ...) without modification of the sample surface ? I guess that to each kind of material corresponds one given preparation method. Were such methods gathered in a monograph, book or review article ? Thanks !
