Dear Heather, Are you aware of any case studies done on the subject in Australian context?

You might be interested to look at the "Idle No More" movement in Canada, to have the rights of Aboriginal people recognized. There have already been some books and articles published on the topic, including Ken Coate's "#IdleNoMore and the Remaking of Canada".

You might also be interested to look, for the same period (2012-2013), at Chief Theresa Spence (of Attawapiskat First Nation) hunger strike to raise awareness to a major housing crisis in her community (a situation that is unfortunately found in several remote indigenous communities in Canada).

Can we consider Paulo Friere's "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" as one of the strategies of non violent struggle for social change? Has this strategy been used on a significant scale anywhere in the world? Is there any documentation available on this experimentation? 

Take a look at Saul Alinsky and his work and influence, starting with his Rules for Radicals.

There are lots of videos on the internet about the Idle No More movement. You just have to Google it. They also have a website (http://www.idlenomore.ca/), as well as Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Look at the transition from authoritarianism to democracy in Taiwan. That entailed a variety of changes in society. There was some violence, but it was from the state rather than from those seeking change.

There are so many. On democratization see j. Bruce Jacobs, Democratizing Taiwan. Denny Roy and Shelley Rigger also have books out on this. Google the Institute of Sociology, Academia Sinica. You'll be able to go through the publications of all the researchers. Don't be put off by gobbeldygook--that's just Chinese characters, but most of the researchers also publish in English.

To follow up on Saul Alinksy, the organization that does his work is Industrial Areas Foundation which trains community organizers in the US, President Obama referenced use of his work as a organizer in Chicago.
