A third option is Crosslinguistic influence in language and cognition by Scott Jarvis and Aneta Pavlenko (New York & London: Routledge) from 2008. I attach a review of this book by Anastassia Zabrodskaja in Sociolinguistic Studies (2012) 6/3: 603 - 607.

Generally speaking,  different ways in which one language can impact another within an individual speaker is known as cross-linguistic influence (CLI) . As you have rightly noticed, such an  influence  can be bidirectional. However,  in backward translation  when L2 is rendered into L1, L2 can also  influence the production of L1 in interesting ways. I recommend the theory that Vivian Cook discussed more than 15 years ago in the article: "Using L1 in the classroom, 2001". look for it in the web. it is very easy and understandable.

Also Rod Ellis' book " Second Language acquisition, 1997". He also speaks about the importance of Interlanguage stage that the learner acquires in the way to achieve mastery on L2.

There is another theory about the "situated learner". try to study the term from the web.

I couldn't remember the name of the author. and I'm relly sorry I don't have the links.

I recommend the borrowing technique of translation to transfer a text from foreign language to mother tongue.

I think this article might be interesting for you. The article shows the influence of English L2 on the Brazilian Portuguese L1. In addition, it discusses interesting methodological issues to be able to find the effects of L2 on L1.

You might think about trying some sort of reaction time measure, perhaps a self-paced reading task or something along these lines. Or perhaps some type of eye-tracking study? Neither of these are productive tasks, of course, but they help you to control variables and are well-established methodologies. If you want some ideas about how you can test the L1's influence on L2 processing using response time measures, you might have a look at some of the papers I have published on this. My collaborators and I have found a pretty consistent L1 influence for L2 collocational processing even for highly advanced speakers of English as an L2. Hope this help. Good luck!

I have looked at L2-L1 transfer in terms of verb argument structures using EEG. I also included behavioral data (sentence naturalness ratings). I'm attaching a talk I gave on this project last week at the International Symposium on Bilingualism. If you want more info on the methods, I can send you a copy of my dissertation.
