Executive functions, hierarchical planning, spatial cognition, and visuomotor integration all in one sounds like a tall order for a short test! The trail-making test (especially Trails B) includes several of the functions you want, but not hierarchical planning. The Tower of Hanoi and its many variants would be excellent, but won't really get into the spatial/motor side as much. Perhaps the Porteus Mazes or a variant thereof?

Hello - it also depends on which population you intend to test. There are variants of the Tower of Hanoi/London that are suitable for different age groups, as you already know. If you are interested in spatial hierarchical planning, and your target population is healthy adults, you may want to use Ehrlich and Johnson-Laird's (1982) task of understanding spatial descriptions, in which (according to our research; Morra, 2001) the construction of a spatial mental model relies heavily on working memory. If you are interested in spatial planning in children, instead, some drawing tasks might be useful (e.g., Morra, Moizo & Scopesi, 1988 for primary school children, or Panesi & Morra, 2018, for preschoolers). Some drawing tasks could be useful with the elderly, or with certain neuropsychological patients - for instance, the clock drawing task. Best wishes!

I want to start by informing you that I have a conflict of interest in that I am a part owner of the software I'm mentioning. You can download to a PC the desktop software CogQuiz at no cost. It is fully functioning but with nags. The nags are removed if purchased. The desktop package contains the Tower of Hanoi and Tower of London. They contain several of the researcher recommended problem sets. You can construct in a matter of minutes all available problem sets and set the language. There are a number of other tests available but these are look ahead problem solving tasks with lifespan norms. Thus, my recommendation.

Sorry, these tasks (Towers of Hanoi and London) are available in manual versions, but you miss a lot of useful information. Additionally, with the cost of computers and the programs they are essentially similar in cost.

Clock Drawing, Bender Gestalt test ONLY with Marley (1982) scoring, Block design from WAIS, and you can build a good Tower of Hanoi set to use. These are in addition to good suggestions above. If your sample includes suspected early dementia or ability-delayed persons, ask them to draw the plan of their house or apartment or just their bedroom - accuracy can easily be confirmed. Such Executive Functions can also be assessed by assigning a task like calling a cab/taxi, since it requires several steps whose accuracy can be confirmed. Such Criterion Validity is essential in whatever battery you choose.

Zoo Map test, Action Program task and Key Search test from BADS battery. Tower tests. But in my opinion they are not very accurate. They are schematic and task mainly working memory, which other tests measures more precisely and indirectly. Besides they need physical aids to administer. You can also use 20 questions tasks as a way of so to speak semantic planning tasking also verbal reasoning. Especially interesting is the version from D-KEFS battery. I also think that R-OCF copying is a very good measure of planning when used properly.

That's quite a list that's building up here and I am not aware of a current/recent or historic review article that looks at these tests.

In clinical practice I also do find Subtest 8 from the Visual Object and Space Perception (VOSP) Battery ("Cube analysis") sometimes helpful. It's ten items, essentially pencil drawings or 2-D representations of a 3-D design involving 'cubes'. The individual is asked to work/out (infer) how many blocks are represented, including the ones that are not visible due to the 3-D nature of the design. It's quite fast to administer.

The other one that comes to mind is the WAIS-IV puzzles subtest?

To add on to the discussion, here are some tests that have not been mentioned:

For executive functioning paper-and-pen tests, you can consider (i) Raven's Matrices test, and (ii) Trail Making Test (two versions). For visuospatial/visuomotor functioning, you can consider (i) Guilford-Zimmerman spatial orientation test, and (ii) perspective-taking test (Kozhevnikov & Hegarty, 2001; Hegarty & Waller, 2004).
