I am doing ethnographic research on global seafarers on international merchant ships and sometimes observed that "being Japanese" was used as a marker of difference or an instance of boundary work among Filipino seafarers.
As a background for the interpretation of these observation, I am interested in the general public discourse about Nikkeijin, that is Filipinos with Japanese origin, in the Philippines and public attitudes towards this minority group. I am especially interested in the question if discrimination against Nikkeijin Filiplinos is common in the Philippines.
Unfortunately, my research on the matter did not lead to useful results. Most research papers on the topic focus on the struggle of recognition of Nikkeijin in Japan, one paper I found dealt with identity construction of Nikkeijin in the Philippines.
I would be very grateful if you could help me by recommending me any literature on this matter.
