I am currently working on functionalized MXene materials and their characterization techniques. I am particularly curious about the operating mode employed during the AFM characterization. Can you please clarify whether contact, non-contact, or tapping modes are commonly used for functionalized MXene characterization?

Sasan Rostami in the characterization of functionalized MXene materials using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), different modes such as contact, non-contact, and tapping (intermittent contact) modes are considered based on the sample's nature and the information required. Contact mode, where the tip maintains constant contact with the surface, offers high-resolution images but might not be ideal for MXenes due to potential sample or tip damage, especially important when dealing with soft or delicate surfaces. Non-contact mode, which involves oscillating the tip near but not touching the sample, reduces the risk of damage and is suitable for electrical and magnetic measurements but may offer less detail in topographical imaging. Tapping mode, a preferred choice for MXene characterization, allows the tip to gently tap the surface, combining high-resolution imaging with minimal risk of altering or damaging the sample, making it particularly suitable for fragile or soft materials. As for the tips used in AFM studies of MXenes, silicon or silicon nitride tips are common due to their resolution and compatibility, with specific tip choices such as coated tips for particular functional properties being determined by the detailed requirements of the characterization. Thus, while each AFM mode has its advantages, tapping mode tends to be the most commonly utilized for functionalized MXenes due to its balance between imaging quality and sample integrity.
