I am aware that the assumption of moderation analyses is that independent and dependant variables are continuous, however, is there a similar test that can be run to whether a third variable influences the relationship between a categorical independent variable and continuous dependant variable?
Yes you can run the analysis, but you would first need to change the variable into a continuous, To do that you have several options, Since I am an SPSS Data Analyst, I will guide you accordingly with my experience and knowledge,
- First, you can choose at what level you want to check the relationship, lest say you have IV, its Emotional intelligence, and DV, it's Quality of life, you want to see if gender moderates the relationship, and its categorical since you are interested in seeing if females (as a gender) moderated, you will create a dummy variable with Female and use that as a moderator.
- If you want to look at each level, you will have to create a dummy for each level, by doing so you lets say have 4 levels to your categorical variable will have 4 moderators, so ou have to check for each level separately.
