Parking in congested areas is a big topic with some areas of research:
(1) self-parking cars, which are able to find the parking place autonomously
(2) parking facilities (incl. valet parking, automated functions, etc.)
(3) mechanical systems or robots for more efficient packaging of cars when parking (e.g. varioparker)
ad (1): There are systems available on the market (e.g. from BMW), but they work only in restricted areas under simplified boundary conditions, e.g. self parking into a private garage. Future cars may be able to drive autonoumously and to find their parking place by them self. Challenges for research are the develoment of safe systems for autonomous driving.
ad (2): Future parking facilities will provide additional functionalities, e.g. automated charging of electric vehicles. In combination with (1), a share of future park-houses will beoperated by cars only - without driver. This gives the possibility of increasing space efficiency.
ad (3): There are several mechanical multiparking systems on the market. They provide storing cars with a relatively high degree of packaging. Challenges are the costs for these systems, and the possibility of individual access to the stored cars. In addition, some of these systems are rather slow in their operation.

I think its a nice way to save space. For apartment buildings its a mandatory to provide certain parking per number of flats, to utilize available FSI/FAR often builder tend to cover most of the area and left out with zero space free for open parking for visitors etc. Now a days everyone keeps more than a car per family and provided parking is only 1.
Advantages:
-2 cars can be parked in the space of 1.
- less built up space for parking >> less construction cost
Disadvantages:
-Cost
- Additional height required in Basement or Loft for double parking.
Varioparker is space-reduction solution but has crucial disadvantages:
1. Max. height (not every car could park)
2. Same time loading/unloading varioparker could be unconfortable for users
3. Possible ECU (electronics) failures could result in impossibility in loading/unloading and that could cause users dissatisfaction
4. Fear of damaging varioparker (mainly by unexperienced drivers) could affect whether there would be an interest of using such solution of parking or not.
