Hello;
I collected some samples from the southern facing slope of the Burdwood bank, on the east side, Falkland islands Water. I obtained lots of corals from depths of 400, 1000 and 1300 m, but I do not have the expertise to identify them. Could you point me in the right direction of someone that might be able to help?
I'm currently in the Antarctic, so I might be slow at answering.

Ander, I just sent you a message with an email address to contact Andrew J. Davies in the University of Rhode Island who has expertise on this. I think you knew him when he worked in the Scottish Association for Marine Science.

Cairns | PhD | at the Smithsonian Institution, DC | https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Stephen_Cairns used to be a renowned expert in the Atlantic deepsea coral fauna. Many of his specific publications can be downloaded from the Smithsonian website for further study and ID. Further, someone commanding extended expertiese in benthic Octocoral fauna (also) from the Falkland region is Dr. Michelle Taylor, see Dr Michelle L. Thank you very much for your answers. Sorry for my slow reply rate, my internet connection at the moment is intermittent as I am in the field. I will check the information provided. I have heard of Stephen Cairns before, I will email him and see if he can help. The problem is that we want to take the samples back to the UK, but we need a CITES permit to do so, and for those we need some level of identification for these organisms. But from a ship with bad internet, it is difficult to search for experts.

Hi Ander,
I don't know about your scheduled landfalls, but we successfully shipped Octocoral-samples from Stanley in the Falklands (UK) through Spain to Germany still within EU and without CITES requirements. But this might possibly not hold for scleractinians. SC has retired some time ago, but he still appears active - i.e. responsive in his field ...
