 Frederic - I am so glad you drew my attention to this discussion. These are some of the examples I am looking for to investigate the crossroads between literature, analogies and science. It certainly is a rich discussion on RG - I have not even got to the end of it yet. Thanks. 

But is it maybe so that literature draws more on science than the other way round?

A very classical example could be Frankenstein? It is a reference from literature that has a lot to do with philosophy of science, and a little bit with science communication...

Dear Birthe  - you might find my book The Poetry of Physics and the Physics of Poetry of interest. It is the textbook of a course I teach with the same title since 1971 in which I introduce physics to humanities students without using mathematics and look at poetry related to physics. The purpose of the course and the book is to increase the science literacy of the users who find  math an impediment to learning physics. The motivation for me was to correct the situation where important decisions in our society are made by  those who are scientifically illiterate. 

Guillermo Santamaria - Thanks for your example. Yes, indeed it is an example of the crossroads between literature and physics. An example that changed a lot in the world back then. Thanks for reminding me of this interesting example.

Hello Birthe, The work and published papers of Dr. David Secko, who teaches Science Journalism at Concordia University in Montreal, may be helpful to you. He certainly draws his classroom material from real life. As well, the International Association for Literary Journalism Studies publishes a journal and holds an annual conference (in 2016 in Brazil) in which all which subjects are considered by a literary standpoint. In addition, disasters -- natural and man-made -- provide a ready subject for science and literature.

Medical scientists and practitioners have used drama and literature to illustrate ideas such as PTSD.  

Scientists are already familiar with the senses of seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, feeling, or touching. As you are perhaps better informed, all these and many others are well known human communication skills.  Communication issues are: social, economic, environmental, or political.

     These are verbal/oral (use of words or word of mouth) and non-verbal (body language). The latter includes: objects, colours, images, graphics, sign language, technologies such as biological (people, plants, and animals), chemicals, infrastructure, mechanicals, machines, electronics and electrical like ICTs (like phone, radio, TV, camera, fax, press, copiers, satellite, internet, computer).

     In addition, all these are directly related to the basic human communication skills of speaking, listening, writing, reading, and understanding. Besides, a regular school, college, or university education and training curriculum should have a specific course on communication skills.

     Communication skills are based learned skills ad competencies through regular practice of all the basic skills stated above. Science communication is simple, clear, accurate, precise, concise, logical, or specific. Likewise, a good communication is based on research on the subject or the audience.

      As a communicator, I say, science is knowledge obtained through a systematic investigation (research) of nature or materials in a specific environment (air /atmosphere, land/earth, and water).

     So, in a good communication piece, there is a topic or subject, (source, message, channel, audience, feedback or reply), introduction (with objective), method, result, conclusion, and may be, recommendation. It also addresses the questions: what? Who? When? Where? Why? and how?

     In this case, communication is a process of sharing or exchanging information, ideas, emotions, feelings, or data using a common language (protocol). The sender and receiver should be proficient.

     As a result, scientists or science students should read, write, listen, and practice all forms of science communication skills and learn to integrate them into their regular work or activities. There are several print and electronic documents o this subject most of which are freely downloadable. As a matter of fact, communication skills are the core vale of ever scientist for practical, personal, and professional competence, prospects, relevance, or benefits.

Wilson - thanks for your elaborate comment with many good points. Food for thought. I like your closing statement in particular, which touches upon my hypothesis that many inventions/much research never makes it anywhere for lack of communication of the results.  

Barry - Thanks a lot for your comment - and the wealth of examples given in your ppt. They made me think of quite some examples from literature that have been used to illustrate traumas over time - from history to present time.

Ismael - Thanks for your insight and many examples. You also touch upon the lack of communication of ideas, and how others have benefitted from that and have launched the idea and benefitted from that in turn.  Also thanks for reminding this group of readers of the many TV programs that take up inventions and present them to investors and the audience. 

Wilson, I find your answer very inspiring, and just came across it now it's 3 years old. I tend to totally agree with you, but as a fairly traditional scientist and journal editor, I tend to emphasise a bit more than you the written and peer-reviewed published article for communicating, particularly among scientists. In this system and in all the verbal/oral and non-verbal means of communication you mention, we all get teaching from third parties about how much we can trust all the different kinds of information we come across, which is roughly the equivalent of peer review.

And it doesn't just apply to people. Non-human animals, plants, bacteria, etc. have to sort the different true, fake and irrelevant information they receive from the different sources you mention, so they don't get tricked and exploited. In some cases the peer review is provided by their genes (and other information from parents), the ones that survived their ancestors' getting eliminated. In other cases "we" (humans, animals, plants, bacteria, etc.) can learn from "listening to" or watching our neighbours.

I use it all the time. I teach ethics in science and we look at examples of scientific fraud from Galileo to Lysenko.

By referring to historical literature and literary sources we examine how scientific ethics evolved as the techniques of science evolved.
