This huge mushroom has sprouted on a dead, cut trunk of Conocarpus lancifolius from the Combretaceae family. It resembles Ganoderma, but I am not an expert in mushroom identification. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Exact species identification is difficult without spore analysis, but the following candidates are likely....
1. Ganoderma applanatum (Artist’s Conk) – very common, grows on dead or weakened wood.
2. Ganoderma adspersum (Southern Bracket) – often found on old hardwood trees.
3. Ganoderma australe – similar to G. applanatum but produces larger fruiting bodies.
4. Ganoderma resinaceum (Resinous Polypore) – often has a lacquer-like, resinous surface.
For a definitive identification, a spore analysis under a microscope or a chemical reaction test with potassium hydroxide (KOH test) would be really helpful.
