I am looking for some (preferentially recent) observational evidences of mountain wave breaking in the upper troposphere - lower stratosphere region. It is to be expected from a simple consideration of increasing GW amplitudes with height that the largest amplitude modes will break lower and the smaller ones propagate higher and I think that I have read a similar conclusion from some papers related to DEEPWAVE campaign..Geographically less localized papers would be welcomed as well..

The current SSW (sudden stratospheric warming) was caused by a gravity wave breaking:

I do not believe that the current SSW was caused by or is a gravity wave. See attached file.

In my research I argue for the GW role in SSWs, so that would be good news for me. However, detailed analysis is needed. Looking forward to read (or produce) some in the near future!

thank you very much for sharing your thoughts on SSWs and dynamics of the polar vortex in general!
Such a shared knowledge and critical thoughts about the state of our current understanding, for me personally, can be more valuable than hundreds of papers.
I absolutely agree with you on the necessity to take into account radiative and diabative proccesses and also on the role of synoptic evolution in the lower troposphere.
Only, I would like to argue that GWs are such a quick mediator of information so that the change in tropospheric even near surface conditions will be "felt" by the stratosphere in terms of GWs first.
I (and co-authors) made a simple analysis to show that such a mechanism can be traced also in GCMs:
