Dear Petr Mikheev, additives in general act in two different ways. They may act as plasticizers or spacers, which reduce internal cohesion, chains packing, and even may reduce crosslinking density. In these situations, properties get down. The other way is either to act as necleation centers for possible crystallization and chain ordering (good packing increases internal cohesion), and may pariticipate or catalyse curing. Thanks for the reply. The problem is that usually active diluents reduce the modulus of elasticity and increase the ultimate deformation of the epoxy. Due to rarer crosslinking, but there are facts (not very reliable) that in the case of furfurylglycidyl ether, the viscosity of the liquid binder decreases, but after curing, the modulus of elasticity does not change. This fact raised doubts among my colleagues and me that it might be an artifact . A colleague's opinion is that this is possible only in the case of double bonds in the diluent
What about the ethylene oxide (epoxy group) of the furfurylglycidyl ether! May be it has the same reactivity of that of the epoxy resin? At least grafting.
But surprisingly, this Nobel result did not arouse interest. There are 7 citations in total, of which 5 are self-citations
I think the work should be continued in depth to elucidate by which mechanism the effect of active diluent is manifested. The decrease in viscosity has many reasons.
